Tips for Helping Your Puppy Through the Teething Phase

Tips for Helping Your Puppy Through the Teething Phase

1. Understanding Puppy Teething

The teething phase begins at around three to four months of age when your puppy's baby teeth fall out, and their adult teeth start coming in. This process can be painful for your puppy, and chewing can provide them with relief. It is also essential to understand that puppies do not distinguish between acceptable items to chew, such as their toys, and unacceptable items such as your shoes or furniture.

2. Provide Chew Toys

Providing your puppy with a variety of chew toys can alleviate their pain and also divert their chewing attention from unwanted items. Be sure to choose durable toys specifically made for teething puppies that cannot easily be chewed apart or swallowed. You can also try toys that you can stuff with treats to keep your pet engaged in chewing.

3. Exercise and Playtime

Playing and exercising with your puppy can help distract them from their teething discomforts and reduce pent-up energy that may lead to destructive behavior. Besides, playing with your puppy is a great way to sooth and strengthen the bond between you two.

4. Cold Therapy

Just like human babies, puppies also appreciate cold relief when they are teething. A simple solution is to freeze a wet washcloth and give it to your pet to chew on. The cold temperature can reduce swelling and relieve pain in sore gums. You can also buy specially designed cooling toys for puppies from pet stores.

5. Positive Training

Positive reinforcement training is critical during the teething phase. Teaching your puppy what is acceptable to chew and what is not is an essential part of their training. You should always praise your pup for chewing on their designated toys and redirect their attention if they are biting on inappropriate objects. Positive training will help your puppy learn good behavior that will carry over into their adult life.

Conclusion

Your puppy hitting their teething stage doesn't mean that you have to deal with chewed-up belongings and scratched furniture. With love, patience, and consistency, your pet can overcome this painful phase while learning proper chewing behavior. Provide a variety of chew toys, exercise and play with your pet, offer cold therapy, and reinforce positive behavior through training. Remember, this teething phase won't last forever, and your puppy will soon be sporting their strong and healthy adult teeth.
